The requirement, included in the 2019 Medicare Physician Fee Schedule (MPFS), was unexpected, as it was not included in the proposed rule released in July.
MIPS requires eligible providers to report data associated with quality measures and improvement activities. Data collected in 2019 will be used to adjust providers’ payments in 2021.
The reporting requirement, effective Jan. 1, 2019, will affect only a very small percentage of Medicareenrolled members. Exclusions for providers who have lower volumes of Medicare patients exempt most ASHA members from MIPS reporting. The program applies only to Medicareenrolled audiologists and SLPs who meet all of the following criteria:
  • Bill $90,000 or more a year under Medicare Part B.

  • See 200 or more Medicare patients.

  • Provide 200 or more distinct procedures to Medicare beneficiaries.
