Three Students Win Ethics Essay Contest

Kaley Ervin, an undergraduate speech-language pathology student at Texas State University, received first place in ASHA’s 2018 Student Ethics Essay Award competition for “Overstatement of Qualifications: Misrepresentation in Clinical Practice.”
Ervin received a complimentary student registration to the 2018 ASHA Convention in Boston, a one-year membership in the National Student Speech Language Hearing Association (NSSLHA) and $750.
Two other speech-language pathology students also received recognition. Second place—NSSLHA membership and $500—went to Cara Richman, a master’s student at Western Kentucky University, for “On Defrost, Disclosure, and Professional Drive.” Third place—NSSLHA membership and $250—was awarded to Rivka Moller, an undergraduate student at Nova Southeastern University, for “Sound Advice: Conflict of Interest in Audiological Practice.”
The ethics essay competition is open to students enrolled in any U.S. communication sciences and disorders undergraduate, post-baccalaureate and entry-level graduate program. For this year’s topic—disclosure, misrepresentation and conflict of interest—students presented and resolved an ethical challenge created by the inappropriate transition of clinical services.
The competition is part of ASHA’s efforts to enhance ethics education. It encourages students to think about ethical decision-making and raises awareness of situations that could pose ethical dilemmas.
The topic for the 2019 contest, which opened Sept. 1, is the ethical use of social media.
