Plano, Texas-based Reliant—a national provider of rehabilitation therapy—has paid $6.1 million to resolve claims that it paid kickbacks to skilled nursing facilities (SNFs) and physicians as inducement to use Reliant’s services.
In violation of the False Claims Act, Reliant allegedly provided nurse practitioners to SNFs at greatly reduced or no cost in return for contracting with Reliant to provide rehabilitation therapy to residents.
Reliant also allegedly violated the act by submitting false Medicare claims. The claims were the result of alleged improper contracts between Reliant and SNF physicians, who supervised and collaborated with Reliant’s nurse practitioners at inflated fees in exchange for the SNFs’ therapy business.
The allegations were originally brought by a physician under the whistleblower provisions of the False Claims Act, which permit private citizens with knowledge of fraud against the government to bring an action on behalf of the United States and to share in any recovery. The whistleblower will receive approximately $915,000.
