Thank you, thank you, thank you for publishing “The Change in ‘Productivity’” by Ed Garrett in the September issue. It was a well-reasoned and well-written article regarding productivity, and was very much appreciated by those of us who work in management in the long-term care industry. It looked at the productivity issue from many sides—historically, professionally, poorly managed and well-managed. It was particularly appreciated by those of us in the long-term care industry who do strive to manage our clinicians’ time based on the clinical needs of our patients and who treat our clinicians respectfully, from both a labor and clinical-skills perspective.
Productivity has become a hot-button issue, and it is clear that there are providers who manage from the “dark side.” But there are a great many of us who manage productivity to provide excellent care to our patients—while keeping our companies fiscally intact to be able to provide our clinicians with a fair living wage. It was nice seeing a positive approach that gave credit to the many providers in the industry who try every day to do the right thing for our patients and our clinicians—we are out there!

“Productivity” in long-term care is a complicated, nuanced issue. We strive to present a balance of views in the Leader.
