How can audiologists adapt to the rapidly shifting hearing health care paradigm?
In the September issue of ASHA Access Audiology, certified audiologist and entrepreneur Aaron C. Jones examines this issue, particularly the effects of several factors: patients who are educated consumers with expectations informed by experiences in other industries; the availability of over-the-counter hearing aids with audiological features; and declining profit.
Jones emphasizes the need for audiologists to work at the top of their license—delivering services consistent with their unique skills and delegating tasks that can be accomplished by someone or something else—and the need to provide patient-centered care to elevate the patient experience. Audiologists must clarify their professional value proposition so that consumers will choose their services, despite the availability of perceived alternatives.
ASHA Access Audiology is a bimonthly electronic newsletter that addresses the interests and needs of professionals and students interested in hearing, balance and audiology.
