The top 20 autism-related research studies in 2017 included investigations into potential autism spectrum disorder (ASD) biomarkers, development of children with ASD, prenatal exposure and ASD risk, ASD treatments and interventions, and ASD prevalence by demographic groups.
These and other studies are described in the “2017 Summary of Advances in Autism Spectrum Disorder Research,” released by the Interagency Autism Coordinating Committee (IACC). The IACC, a federal advisory committee that coordinates ASD-related federal activities, annually selects scientific advances that represent significant top research breakthroughs from a pool of research articles nominated by IACC members.
The document includes plain-language summaries of the articles, grouped according to seven topic areas in the IACC strategic plan: signs of and early intervention for ASD, underlying biology of the disorder, causes and prevention/mitigation of symptoms, treatment and interventions, quality-of-life services and supports for people with ASD, the needs of adults with ASD, and the infrastructure to support the needs of people with ASD.
