Clinical Supervision Bullying Needs More Attention

I was very happy to see the article on bullying and intimidation in clinical supervision in the December 2017 issue and the accompanying articles about civility in the workplace (“That’s Just Mean,”“Seeking Civility Among Faculty”). As a recent graduate of an audiology program, I have experienced this firsthand and it resulted in a multitude of problems for me in my externship year. This is supposed to be a year to refine clinical skills, but instead I mostly spent it dealing with the problems this toxic relationship with my supervisor created. It was only a change of location that prevented me from missing out on my degree entirely. These issues still affect my abilities as a clinician. I have made significant improvements, but from time to time, I still feel the effects of the poor treatment I experienced.
I hope this issue receives more attention and is studied further as author James Mancinelli suggests. As clinicians, I hope we can all be forward-thinking enough to recognize that students each need something different to thrive and that these students are the future of the profession. They may even be taking care of us some day. It’s so important to remember that we can have an effect on their clinical abilities and that emotional well-being contributes to their learning of these skills.
