Valarie Beavers Fleming, chair and associate professor in the Department of Communication Disorders at Texas State University in San Marcos, has been selected to serve as the 2017–2018 Presidential Fellow, working with University President Denise Trauth, on special projects and serving as a member of the president’s cabinet.

Deaths
Sanford (Sandy) E. Gerber, 83 on May 17, 2017, in Spokane, Washington, of a heart attack. Gerber received a master’s degree from the University of Illinois and his doctorate from the University of Southern California. Dually certified in audiology and speech-language pathology, he worked as a researcher in the communications industry and as a consultant for public and private institutions, including 15 years as an “expert research linguist” for the National Security Agency. He was a university professor for 35 years, first at the University of California, Santa Barbara and then at Eastern Washington University in Spokane and as a visiting professor at universities in the United States and abroad. Gerber’s interests ranged from pediatric audiology—he was a member of the first Joint Committee on Infant Hearing—to genetic disorders. He published 14 books and more than 150 journal articles. An ASHA Fellow, Gerber received the Aram Glorig Award from the International Society of Audiology.
