When did you join your SIG—and what made you want to join?
I joined SIG 9 as a clinician in 2007. I joined because I was interested in getting more information about serving children who are deaf or hard of hearing (DHH) from experts and colleagues around the country. I love the fact that SIG 9 is interprofessional in its membership and content.
How has your involvement with the SIG helped you in your career?
Being a SIG affiliate and serving as the professional development manager (PDM) for SIG 9 have been great ways to connect with others with similar research and clinical interests and to get involved at a national level. My involvement as PDM has contributed to my growth as a professional and, in turn, helps to shape the content I share with future professionals in the courses I teach.
How do you carve out time to volunteer with the SIG while working in your full-time job and balancing other commitments? What advice would you give to someone who’d like to get more involved in the SIG, including how you get support from your supervisor/institution?
When a task is fun and energizing, it is easier to find (or make) time to do it. I thoroughly enjoy finding out about the continuing education needs of the profession and having the opportunity to meet those needs through convention offerings, Perspective articles and webinars. As PDM, I am consistently thinking of ways to share new information with our affiliates as well as ways to bring this to the greater ASHA community, since hearing loss can be such a specialized field. If someone is interested in getting involved, my advice is to find a role that matches their skillset and interests; it makes the work easy and interesting. My institution has been very supportive of my role with ASHA, as it makes me a better professional and keeps me happy!
What upcoming events related to or sponsored by your SIG should everyone know about? Chats, conferences or convention events?
I am excited about the presentations at the upcoming 2017 ASHA Convention in Los Angeles. For our short course, SIG 9 is planning a panel discussion around tools and processes for collaboration among medical and educational providers (audiologists, speech-language pathologists and educators) and an invited one-hour session about the emotional aspects of hearing aid retention. I am also looking forward to engaging a broader community of professionals through our upcoming ASHA Leader Blog series focused on hearing-related topics in pediatric populations.
What is your favorite recent Perspectives article, and why?
I really enjoy the articles that discuss aspects of interprofessional collaboration, with the understanding that integrating knowledge from families with audiologists, SLPs and educators is really the only way to optimize the outcomes of children who are DHH. I also think the recent article by Teresa Zwolan and Donna Sorkin, “Cochlear Implants 2016: Advances in Technology, Outcomes, and Factors that Drive the Expansion of Cochlear Implant Candidacy” is very informative and useful to share with others with less experience.
