Brain Waves May Distinguish TBI From PTSD

Veterans Administration researchers have found differences in brain waves that may distinguish between mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).
The two conditions share similar symptoms and chronic effects—irritability, restlessness, hypersensitivity to stimulation, memory loss, fatigue, dizziness—making them difficult to diagnose and treat.
By studying the electroencephalograms (EEGs) of 147 active-duty service members or veterans, researchers led by Laura Manning Franke linked mTBI with increases in low-frequency waves, especially in the prefrontal and right temporal regions of the brain. PTSD was associated with decreases in low-frequency waves, notably in the right temporoparietal region. The study appears in the International Journal of Psychophysiology.
The EEGs don’t pinpoint a region in the brain where the disorders differ, but they do show a pattern that distinguishes the disorders when the results are averaged among a large group.
More work is needed to better understand the differences between electrical-activity patterns in mTBI and PTSD, researchers say, including analysis of scans from larger numbers of patients.
