Students and ASHA members have until Feb. 12 to sign up for the redesigned Student to Empowered Professional (STEP) online mentoring program that launches this spring.
January is National Mentoring Month, a fitting time for ASHA members to consider volunteering as a STEP mentor, and for students to seek guidance from professionals who share their interests.
In response to evaluations from previous participants, the STEP program—which matches communication sciences and disorders (CSD) students with mentors in the field—has implemented several changes to make the program more dynamic and engaging:
  • The program lasts nine months, rather than the previous three or six months.

  • It offers additional training on mentoring resources, community-building and work/life balance.

  • Orientation to the program is available in two formats: web chat and PowerPoint.

  • Enrollment forms are online.

Since 2004 the STEP program has matched more than 2,500 mentoring pairs, providing peer and one-to-one mentoring and creating a sense of community that supports and empowers CSD students. Mentors help students with a variety of questions: for example, factors to consider in choosing a graduate program, selecting a population or setting to pursue, or setting a long-term goal and steps to achieve it.
The new program runs March 1 through Nov. 15.
