The Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA), the new major federal K–12 education law that replaces No Child Left Behind, offers many new opportunities for school-based audiologists and speech-language pathologists to participate in creating state-level accountability systems, academic goals, reporting structures and other requirements.
ASHA has developed “Every Student Succeeds Act: Key Issues for ASHA Members”, a guide for audiologists and SLPs who want to participate in that process.
ESSA requires states to develop new plans to implement the law, which takes full effect in the 2017–2018 school year with 2016–2017 as a transitional year. It requires states to consult with stakeholders, including those representing specialized instructional support personnel, the category that includes audiologists and SLPs.
The guide details how ASHA members can play a role in developing state plans related to professional learning, literacy, and assessment of and early intervening services for children with disabilities.
The guide includes information on 11 key topic areas that are relevant to audiologists and SLPs: implementation timeline, state plans, funding analysis, alternate achievement standards, specialized instruction support personnel, literacy, early intervening services and multi-tiered systems of support, professional learning, professional accountability, dyslexia treatment and early childhood grants.
For each of the 11 areas, the guide lists a general overview of the topic, including relevant citations from the law, a description of the impact the provisions may have on ASHA members, action steps and additional resources.
