Two recently released documents summarize advances in autism spectrum disorder (ASD) research from the past two years.
The Interagency Autism Coordinating Committee (IACC)—a federal advisory group that coordinates all ASD-related efforts in the Department of Health and Human Services—compiled the 2014 summary of advances in ASD research and the 2015 summary of advances in ASD research. Each report summarizes the IACC’s selection for the top 20 research articles for that year.
Studies were selected by the IACC from articles nominated by its members.
The 40 studies give new insight into the underlying biology of ASD and potential risk factors, examine the state of the science in early screening and diagnosis, evaluate promising early intervention strategies, and address health outcomes of people with ASD and issues related to education, transition to adulthood and employment.
Both publications provide short, plain-language summaries and organize them in a consumer-friendly list of five categories: when to be concerned, understanding ASD, treatments and interventions, accessing services and concerns for the future.
