“Speaking up.” It’s something that ASHA members do well—and help others do every day. Mostly, you do it in day-to-day interactions with patients, clients, families, students, supervisors, allied professionals and others.
During May is Better Hearing & Speech Month, the ASHA community has an opportunity to speak up on a larger scale. During this time, you—our 186,000 members and affiliates—can educate people about the importance of communication, the signs of communication disorders and the life-changing services ASHA members provide.
At the national level, ASHA shares these messages in various ways. Last year, for instance, we spoke up via USA Today, a 30-city media tour, new public service announcements and a Listen to Your Buds concert in the nation’s capital, among them. One of the most promising avenues we piloted in 2015 combines the ever-growing power of social media with our impressive membership base via the social media campaign/contest “Speaking Up for Communication.” With your enthusiastic participation, we reached an audience of more than 1.1 million through Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and Instagram.
This year, the “Speaking Up” campaign returns! Participating gives you a chance to win prizes such as an Amazon gift card and a BHSM gift pack. You can also enhance your social media presence, which helps put you in front of key people in your public and professional networks, showcases your expertise, and raises awareness and appreciation of your work.
We hope you’ll join us and help the 2016 effort shatter last year’s numbers.
Here’s how it works:
  • Visit the website asha.socialtoaster.com. Choose one of your social networks to get started (after signing up, connect as many of your social networks as you’d like). Prior to May, you earn points by recruiting others to join—upon registering, you’ll receive your own customized recruitment link.

  • During May, we’ll email you two or three times a week with pre-written social posts that include an eye-catching graphic. (You can see examples from 2015 on the site now.) With one click, you can post these to any of your social media accounts. You maintain complete control and share only what you choose. You also earn extra points by writing your own messages using designated keywords and sharing relevant photos.

  • With each post you share, you help increase public awareness and earn points towards the contest. Each week in May, the person with the most points earns an Amazon gift card.

Sign up to “speak up” today. Email any questions or comments to bhsm@asha.org.
