I am a speech-language pathology hoarder. I save—well, I’ll just say it—trash! (Although I like to think of myself more as a steward of the Earth than an all-out garbage hoarder!) But old boxes and containers make such nifty storage and games. I bought Ferrero Rocher chocolates and, after reluctantly ridding the box of its contents, wondered how I could use it for treatment. Thus, “Snowball Toss” was born. I used gel pens to turn ping-pong balls into snowmen and added snowflakes and points to create a fun game perfect for positive reinforcement. Students toss or bounce the snowmen into the box and keep track of their score as game play continues. This game has been a hit with my K–8 students and effective across speech and language goals.
About me:
I have been working as a school-based SLP since 1983, first in New Jersey and now in New Hampshire, where I have been happily employed at Plymouth Elementary, a K–8 school, since 2005. I am a graduate of ASHA’s Leadership Development Program and serve as the president of the New Hampshire Speech-Language-Hearing Association. I write the Doyle Speech Works blog and am a member of the Frenzied SLPs blogging group.
