NIDCD Replaces Small Grant Program (R03)

The Small Grant Program (R03) of the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders (NIDCD) has been replaced with the NIDCD Early Career Research Award.
The new program took effect Dec. 11, 2015.
The R03 grants—which served a key role for many communication sciences and disorders researchers—helped early-career scientists establish independent research careers by supporting the collection of preliminary data needed to support a subsequent R01 research proposal.
The new Early Career Research Award (ECR)—administered through the R21 mechanism—serves the same purpose as the former Small Grant Program. Funding continues to be available for up to $100,000 in direct costs per year for up to three years.
The first application deadline for the new program is Feb. 26. Researchers planning to submit a new R03 application or resubmit a nonfunded one should submit their application as a new R21.
There are some modifications in the new program. Researchers are encouraged to read the funding opportunity announcement.
