ASHA has posted new guidelines intended to help academic programs offering or planning to offer a clinical doctorate program in speech-language pathology as well as potential students who may consider pursuing the degree.
The clinical doctorate is designed to prepare speech-language pathologists to assume advanced professional roles—such as master clinician, clinical educator, clinical administrator, or leader in a clinical setting or area of specialization—or to serve as collaborators in and supporters of clinical research. Those entering a clinical doctorate program are expected to have earned a master’s degree and have (or qualify for) the Certificate of Clinical Competence in Speech-Language Pathology.
Developed by an ad hoc committee in response to requests from academic program administrators, the guidelines cover six general components: administrative structure and governance, academic and clinical faculty, students, assessment, program resources, and curriculum.
