I am writing to express my disappointment in the interview of H. Gustav Meuller (March 3, 2009). The third question states that “many audiologists rely on the manufacturer's first fit protocol when dispensing hearing aids. Is this a good thing?”
I have been fitting hearing aids since 1993 and have never relied on a first fit. A publication that is supposed to be supporting its membership should not be putting us down in interview questions. I may have missed some article on the number of audiologists using first fit protocols, but I surely think the interviewer must have been referring to hearing aid dealers with this comment and not audiologists.
