I would like to thank The ASHA Leader for publishing my article, “Mission in Mexico Helps Children Use AAC” (Feb. 12, 2008), and for the publication's continued support of my project. Speech-language pathologists still have an opportunity in July 2009 to be part of a team of volunteers who will provide multiple modes of communication to children who are disadvantaged and disabled in an effort to improve their quality of life.
The Children of Mexico project comprises a team of SLPs from around the country who volunteer their time to serve children who are disadvantaged and have communication disorders. In July 2008, 13 SLPs and graduate students had a successful and meaningful professional experience providing services for these children in Guadalajara, Mexico.
The children, who live in a group home, have a variety of disabilities, including cerebral palsy, autism, Down syndrome, and related neurological and learning disorders. Clinicians provide low- and high-tech AAC, as well as traditional speech-language intervention. Additionally, services have been expanded to include a week of hippotherapy in the state of Michoacan. SLPs and graduate students may apply for one or both volunteer opportunities. Readers are welcome to contact me at 650-784-6092 or by e-mail at the address below.
