Although most employers (70 percent) offer wellness programs, only 8 percent of them include hearing health care programs, according to a recent survey of more than 500 benefits professionals.
The survey, conducted by EPIC Hearing Healthcare, a hearing benefits administrator, found that employers are far more familiar with wellness programs addressing overall preventive health issues such as weight control (94 percent), exercise (89 percent), smoking (88 percent) and diabetes management (69 percent) than with programs promoting healthy senses. But fewer than one in four employers is aware of vision and hearing health programs.
After learning how untreated hearing loss can affect employee productivity, employers are more likely to embrace a hearing wellness program, the survey reveals. More than 85 percent of employers said they would add a hearing health program after finding out that employees with untreated hearing loss report it affects their performance.
EPIC offers free resources to help employers integrate messages about the importance of hearing health into health education efforts.
