ASHA Special Interest Group 14, formerly titled Communication Disorders and Sciences in Culturally and Linguistically Diverse Populations, has a new name: Cultural and Linguistic Diversity.
The name change reflects a broadened scope. Based on the idea that communication disorders affect individuals from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds, the SIG now also acknowledges that diversity issues affect the field of communication sciences and disorders, including clinical practice, research and education.
The new name emphasizes a focus not only on individuals who have a unique cultural and linguistic background, but on the diversity that is encountered across all settings, populations and experiences, according to the SIG’s leaders.
