A new toolkit provides free information and guidance to help adults recently diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and people who suspect they have ASD but have not received a formal evaluation.
Autism Speaks, an autism science and advocacy organization, recently launched “Is It Autism and If So, What Next? A Guide for Adults.” The toolkit is designed to help adults with ASD access services and to provide information about their rights and entitlements as an adult on the spectrum. It includes personal essays by people diagnosed with ASD as adults, and tips on how to get a proper evaluation and find effective treatments and services.
The toolkit is part of the organization’s initiative to increase the quality and quantity of opportunities and resources available to adults related to employment, housing and community living, postsecondary education, community integration and more.
Other Autism Speaks toolkits available specifically for young adults and adults with ASD focus on housing and residential supports, employment, transition out of school, and postsecondary educational opportunities.
The organization offers two more toolkits designed for families with recently diagnosed young children and newly diagnosed school-age children.
