A new group—Speech Science—will join the ASHA lineup of special interest groups in 2016.
SIG 19 will provide education and leadership in the areas of speech science research, pedagogy, and related instrumentation and technology. SIG 5, Speech Science and Orofacial Disorders, supported the establishment of SIG 19, and will revise its name, mission and vision to avoid redundancy.
Speech science includes all areas that provide a foundation for theoretical and applied aspects of speech production and perception. Pertinent topics include speech biophysics, processes of speech development, anatomical and neurological comparative study of communication, theories and models of speech production and perception, technological development, the acoustics and physics of speech, and educational issues related to speech science.
SIG 19’s vision is to establish the foremost community for the exchange of knowledge and educational information about speech science and related technological advances.
The SIG 19 community will seek to increase awareness of basic speech research, communicate why fundamental research serves the whole profession, and help translate an increasingly complex knowledge base to the broader professional audience.
Other goals include increasing the number of those pursuing a speech science career, initiating discussion and scholarship to improve speech science instruction, and supporting new and established speech scientists, clinician-scientists and speech science instructors.
Who might find a home in SIG 19? Speech scientists, clinicians, teachers of speech science coursework, students, and anyone who has an interest in speech sciences and related technology. SIG 19 officially goes “live” in January 2016—members can join later this year during the annual dues renewal period.
