For the 75th anniversary of Better Hearing and Speech Month (BHSM), ASHA will take the lead and make May a month to remember with a variety of activities to help audiologists and speech-language pathologists raise awareness of the professions and the value of their services from the classroom to Congress.
This year’s theme, “Speech, Language, and Hearing: The Keys to Better Understanding, ”will focus on the work of clinicians in helping the youngest generation overcome communication hurdles. The celebration will kick off with a special BHSM section in the April 16 issue of The ASHA Leader to help you plan activities for this May. Look for a color poster in the center of the publication, ready to hang in the classroom, waiting room, or clinic. On the reverse side, you’ll find additional BHSM resources and materials. SLPs and audiologists can also spread the word about hearing and speech with a free communication activity book for school-age children.
The materials were developed by popular demand, as ASHA listened to the voices of members who responded to a survey posted on the ASHA Web site last fall. The majority of the 137 respondents said that the focus should be on children this May, with BHSM materials designed for parents, teachers, and administrators.
Jump start your BHSM plans now with some of these activities:
  • Visit the BHSM section of ASHA’s Web site. You’ll find creative ideas for celebrating BHSM and materials to get you started, including sample public service announcements, proclamations, resolutions, and press releases. Also included are promotional products and ASHA products for sale.

  • Audiologists and SLPs in any setting can show their pride in the professions this May—and throughout the year—with a free screensaver that can be downloaded from the BHSM section of ASHA’s Web site beginning in April.

  • Check out what your colleagues are doing this May through the ASHA member forums —and share your own ideas. Email your ideas to bhsm@asha.org.

  • Show elementary school-aged children the importance of good communication skills with a free communication activity book. The activity book can be downloaded and printed from the BHSM section of ASHA’s Web site beginning in mid-April.

  • Raise awareness of the professions online by reproducing the BHSM logo on your organization’s Web site.

  • ASHA, in coalition with other organizations, will take the lead in raising awareness among members of Congress and their staff about speech, language, and hearing issues this May during a product fair on Capitol Hill. Legislators and their staff also will have the opportunity to watch members in action in teaching, education, and research settings through bus tours.
