While reading the October 11 issue of The ASHA Leader, I made a surprising discovery. I saw someone I knew! This was not just anyone, however; this was Dr. Claudio F. Milstein in the “People” section.
I recently shadowed him at the Cleveland Clinic Head and Neck Institute during the summer, and the time I spent watching and learning was nothing short of amazing. I am a novice junior undergraduate, and the clinical session was a real eye-opener in terms of how speech-language pathologists ask the right questions and form ideas as to where the problem originates. I saw my first endoscopy, the famous vocal cord massage, and breathing exercises with him.
On top of that, even with his incredible workload, he found time to ask me questions about what I had seen and how it pertains to speech. This was also my first time learning about speech from another male, and this experience helped me learn different methods of interacting with clients that I can see myself using in the future.
Dr. Milstein is a fantastic teacher and one professional who is making the world a louder place, one phoneme at a time.
