School-based professionals have the opportunity to be part of the 30-member inaugural class of a new ASHA program, “Leadership in Schools.” Applications for the program are due by Feb. 4, 2011, at 5 p.m. ET.
The program is designed to help participants acquire leadership skills; build a professional network; give back to their profession through volunteer service; and influence policies, programs, and services.
The year-long program includes several components:
  • A full-day program on July 7, 2011, at the ASHA national office in Rockville, Md., immediately preceding the 2011 Schools Conference, which will take place July 8–10, 2011, in nearby National Harbor, Md. Attendance at this conference, which is separate from Leadership in Schools, is encouraged but not required.

  • Monthly virtual activities on selected leadership topics.

  • Completion of an individual leadership project.

A $350 participation fee covers the one-day Rockville program, one night in a hotel, meeting materials, and 12 monthly virtual activities. Those attending the Schools Conference are responsible for registration and other expenses.
Eligibility
The program is seeking energetic people who are motivated to influence professional issues in schools and who:
  • Are current ASHA members.

  • Have no prior service on an ASHA or special interest division committee, board, council, working group, or task force.

  • Commit to participate in and complete all requirements.

Members interested in applying to “Leadership in Schools” should send an e-mail to governance@asha.org with a subject line of “Leadership in Schools Program” and their full name and ASHA membership number. Within 24 hours of sending the e-mail, the applicant will receive a link to the online application. The completed application must be submitted by 5 p.m. ET Feb. 4, 2011.
For more information, contact Maureen Thompson, MA, CCC-A, director of association governance services, at mthompson@asha.org.
