Several members of the Council for Clinical Certification in Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology read “Rethinking Clinical Education,” the “From My Perspective” column by James M. Mancinelli and Barbara J. Amster in the January 2015 issue. We wanted to let ASHA members know that the full council will review the concerns, comments and recommendations raised in that column at the June 2015 CFCC meeting.
The standards referenced in the article (like all other CFCC standards) are vetted by practice-analysis studies, which examine what entry-level clinicians need to know to enter practice successfully, as well as where and how they should learn it. The results of these studies drive proposed revisions to the standards, which are then published for peer review. After careful consideration of peer-review feedback, the standards are approved, communicated and implemented.
The CFCC reviews its standards at every meeting to address a variety of factors, including feedback from certificate-holders, educators and other stakeholders. To voice your opinion, feel free to contact us directly at CFCC@asha.org.
Melissa Passe, CFCC chair, Kirksville, Missouri

The Leader will keep readers updated on any changes in CFCC standards.
