Reading the insightful and touching article “Making Every Moment Count,” by Claire Kane Miller and J. Paul Willging (April 24, 2012), coincided with my observation of the DVD “Sharpening Counseling Skills with David M. Luterman, D.Ed.” (The Stuttering Foundation, DVD No. 9800). On page 10 of the Leader, the article had “Suggested Strategies” that addressed parent and caregiver needs. The second suggestion recommended that we stay within our scope of practice. The example supporting this that I am responding to is, “If your interaction with the patient and family triggers significant emotional responses, pursue the input of the social worker or psychologist.”
Dr. Luterman’s discerning view on this DVD helped me realize that it is very much within our scope of practice to be prepared to respond well to these significant emotional responses by listening well, something I need to continue learning and applying. Often, listening well, allowing the emotions at hand to emerge and be acknowledged with respect, opens the door for the family members to walk through to the decisions they need to make. I realize that there have been many times when the referral needed to be for me to practice listening.
