Karen “Cande” Steckol (“People,” Feb. 14) will always be remembered for her profound desire to make a difference in the lives of her graduate students and in the field of speech-language pathology. Cande died Nov. 4, 2011, after a courageous fight with ovarian cancer. We had the privilege of meeting Cande as graduate students at the University of Louisville, where she was an outstanding instructor in childhood language disorders and other topics. Cande taught us the value of language samples, schemes related to objects, and accurate assessment in fluency disorders. She wanted more than anything to connect with students and have an effect on their learning. Students came to appreciate her deep level of commitment as well as her raging sense of humor.
The Kentucky Speech-Language-Hearing Association Conference on Communication Disorders is among the largest in the country thanks, in part, to Cande Steckol. Typical of her quest for excellence in education, Cande participated in cancer clinical trials at MD Anderson, yet stayed on as chair of communication disorders at the University of Alabama. We are all challenged to adhere to Cande’s principles of excellence.
