The ASHA Leader, February 2011, Vol. 16, 28. doi:10.1044/leader.AN4.16022011.28
Nominations are now open for three clinical awards from the American Speech-Language-Hearing Foundation: the Frank R. Kleffner Clinical Career Award, the Louis M. DiCarlo Award for Recent Achievement, and the Rolland J. Van Hattum Award for Schools-Related Professionals.
Frank R. Kleffner Clinical Career Award
Deadline: April 1
This award recognizes outstanding contributions to clinical science and practice in communication sciences and disorders over a period of at least 20 years. The lifetime contributions may be in clinical service, clinical service supervision or administration, clinical research, or any other activity that has promoted clinical excellence.
A nominee’s work may have been accomplished anywhere in the world, and the contributions must have been specific and multiple with great impact on service recipients. These achievements must demonstrate improvement or acceleration of quality of clinical care in speech-language pathology and/or audiology.
This award—a signal honor for the recipient—is given in honor of Frank R. Kleffner, a former president of the ASHFoundation and of ASHA, who worked tirelessly to professionalize and expand the charitable goals of the foundation.
Louis M. DiCarlo Award for Outstanding Recent Clinical Achievement
Deadline: April 1
Each state association may select one individual to receive an ASHFoundation State Clinical Achievement Award for demonstrated contributions to the advancement of knowledge in clinical practice in speech-language pathology or audiology; one of these awardees will be selected to receive the DiCarlo Award.
The DiCarlo recipient is chosen for advancing knowledge in clinical practice as evidenced by specific accomplishments within the past six years. Nominees are not limited to any particular type of clinical achievement or activity, but the accomplishment must be specific, clearly defined and substantiated, and clearly within the most recent six years. The $1,500 award is designed to further the work upon which the award is based.
The award is given in memory of Louis M. DiCarlo, who had a long and distinguished clinical career in communication sciences and disorders before his death in 1996.
Rolland J. Van Hattum Award for Schools-Related Professionals
Deadline: April 15
This award is given in recognition of exemplary commitment and contribution to audiology and/or speech-language pathology service delivery in a school setting. The award includes $1,000 to the recipient and $500 to the recipient’s school system.
Examples of activities or achievements that may be recognized by the Van Hattum Award include exemplary clinical service, supervision, or research in a school setting; development of an innovative program (clinical or training) in a school setting, especially one that is replicable; and promotion or enhancement of public or private support for audiology and speech-language pathology services in the schools.
This award is given in memory of Rolland J. Van Hattum, who had a long and distinguished career providing and supporting audiology and speech-language pathology services in the schools.
Official nomination information, including forms, eligibility requirements, and nomination requirements, is available at the ASHFoundation website or by calling 800-498-2071, ext. 8703. Award recipients will be announced at ASHFoundation events at the 2011 ASHA convention in San Diego and on the ASHFoundation website.
