Communication sciences and disorders students have until May 4 to submit applications for ASHA’s 2015 Minority Student Leadership Program.
The MSLP is held in conjunction with the annual ASHA convention. The 2015 program will take place Nov. 10–15 in Denver.
Open to undergraduate seniors, master’s students, AuD students and PhD students, MSLP is designed to recruit and retain racial/ethnic minorities historically under-represented in CSD. Participation in MSLP educational programming and activities builds and enhances leadership skills, provides an understanding of association governance and operations, and offers the opportunity to interact with leaders in audiology, speech-language pathology, and speech, language and hearing sciences.
Since 1999, more than 530 students from racial/ethnic minority backgrounds have participated in the MSLP, giving them insight into their leadership abilities, offering them a better understanding of how leaders affect change within ASHA, and empowering them to take risks and meet their own challenges. All students are eligible to apply. Preference, however, is given to students from under-represented backgrounds.
Participants receive complimentary registration to the ASHA convention, up to five nights’ lodging, a meal stipend and program materials. Participants are responsible for transportation and personal expenses.
To apply for the program, students must complete the online application form and submit an essay, resume, letter of support and statement of good standing. The deadline for submitting applications is May 4; successful applicants will be notified in September.
For more information, including the online MSLP application form, go to www.asha.org/students/mslp-faqs or e-mail mslp@asha.org.
