Students interested in a national leadership opportunity and the chance to shape the future of the professions can submit applications for positions on the Executive Council of the National Student Speech Language Hearing Association.
Applications are due by March 2 for terms that begin July 1.
The council, NSSLHA’s administrative governing board, comprises 10 regional councilors and one at-large councilor, 10 delegates and one delegate-at-large, and four ASHA members who serve as consultants. Councilors are voting members; delegates have a supporting role and take over the councilor position should the councilor be unable to complete the term. Decisions will be announced in May.
The council meets twice annually (spring and fall), and members attend a required orientation session in the summer. NSSLHA covers all expenses associated with attending the meetings.
Students selected for the council work on committees that establish policies, develop programs to carry out NSSLHA’s mission, and oversee NSSLHA’s national programs—Student Advocacy Day, CSD Career Awareness, CICSD Mentoring Program, the NSSLHA Experience at the ASHA Convention, the NSSLHA Grants Program, NSSLHA Honors, “NSSLHA Loves,” and the NSSLHA Scholarship. The council also has oversight of the association’s $900,000 operating budget.
Regional councilors/delegates. Any student who lives in or attends (or will attend) an academic program in any of these regions may apply for two-year terms:
  • Region 1: Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, Nova Scotia, Quebec.

  • Region 3: Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Tennessee, West Virginia.

  • Region 4: Indiana, Michigan, Ohio, Ontario.

  • Region 6: Colorado, Kansas, Minnesota, Nebraska, North Dakota, Oklahoma, South Dakota.

  • Region 9: Arizona, Montana, New Mexico, Texas, Utah, Wyoming, Alberta, Puerto Rico, Mexico.

At-large councilors/delegates. These one-year positions represent the smaller populations of NSSLHA members (for example, audiology, distance-learning, male or nontraditional students). Any student from an under-represented group may apply for the at-large positions.
