A low-cost, telephone-based hearing screening, developed with funding from the National Institutes of Health, is now available nationwide.
For $5, callers to the National Hearing Test take a 10-minute screening that immediately determines whether hearing in each ear is normal, slightly below normal or substantially below normal. The screening presents a series of digits the caller identifies against a background of noise, comparable to hearing environments at family dinners, large gatherings and movies.
If results indicate below-normal hearing, callers are advised to follow up by seeing an audiologist or other certified hearing professional.
The screening is administered by Communication Disorders Technology, Inc., based in Bloomington, Indiana, in partnership with Indiana University and the VU Medical Center (Amsterdam, Netherlands) and with the support of the NIH National Institute for Deafness and Other Communication Disorders.
Users purchase an access code at www.nationalhearingtest.org, then call the screening line at 866- 223-7575.
