Thirty-four organizations have joined the original six founding organizations—including ASHA—in the International Communication Project, an effort to raise international awareness of communication disorders and of the speech and language therapists, speech-language pathologists, and audiologists who assess and treat them.
ICP 2014 is built on the premise that although healthy communication is vital to the quality of life, communication disorders are largely overlooked as disabilities.
ICP 2014 was launched last winter, and members worked throughout May (Better Hearing and Speech Month) to raise awareness of the project in their respective countries and to bring international attention to communication disorders through traditional and social media outreach. In addition to the increase in participating groups, the project saw a significant spike in website traffic; a 100 percent increase in signatures on the Universal Declaration of Communication Rights; and a 20 percent increase in online followers.
