Parents in the United States can expect to pay $1.4 million to support a child with autism spectrum disorder over the child’s lifetime, a figure that rises to $2.4 million if the child also has an intellectual disability.
U.S. and United Kingdom researchers came up with the figures—and similar totals for parents in the U.K.—by reviewing literature published in the two countries on studies of people with ASD and their families. They combined data on prevalence, level of functioning and place of residence with mean annual costs of services and support, opportunity costs, and productivity losses of individuals with ASD with or without intellectual disability.
The review, led by Ariane V. S. Buescher of the London School of Economics and Political Science, appears in JAMA Pediatrics.
Special education services and parental productivity loss account for the largest pieces of the total when the child is young. During adulthood, however, the highest costs are residential care or supportive living accommodation and individual productivity loss. Medical costs were much higher for adults than for children.
