When I was introduced to kinetic [moldable] sand last winter, I was immediately hooked. I bought a container for each of my sons and we had a blast playing with it at home. I soon decided that I need a sand tray at work as well. I enjoyed bringing the beach into the speech room! I targeted beach-related vocabulary words and speech-sound production by burying items in the sand and having students dig them up and then make a sentence about the item. For example, students worked on the /f/ sound by saying “I found a ____ .“ I also asked students to describe the items that they found in the sand. I love that kinetic sand is so engaging—it provides a really neat sensory experience and can be used in many different ways. I also love how easy it is to clean up at the end of a session!
About me: I am a speech-language pathologist for Fulton County Schools in Alpharetta, Ga., working with students in kindergarten through fourth grade. I have a BA and MEd from Georgia State University. When I am not working, I like to spend time with my sons, my husband and my three cats.
