You can now leave your earplugs at home when you hit downtown Minneapolis for a live-music fix. A new city ordinance requires live-music bars and clubs to provide them, free of charge.
Believed to be the first of its kind in the country, the ordinance applies to about 185 bars, clubs and performance venues as a condition of their liquor licenses. The new regulation went into effect April 19.
A coalition of private funders is paying for the earplugs, which must be single-use and have a noise reduction rating of at least 12 decibels. The measure initially called for noise reduction of at least 30 decibels, but the rating was lowered to be sufficient to reduce the noise but not distort the sound.
In a memo recommending the Minneapolis City Council pass the ordinance, Lisa Goodman, chair of the council’s Community Development and Regulatory Services Committee, indicated that, “While sound barriers can minimize effects to the local area, these enhancements do not protect customers who are vulnerable to irreversible hearing damage.” The vote in favor of the ordinance was unanimous.
