Kathy L. Shapley will become the national advisor of the National Student Speech Language Hearing Association on Jan. 1, 2015.
Shapley, assistant professor and NSSLHA chapter advisor at the University of Arkansas-Little Rock/University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences, received her master’s at the University of Houston and doctorate at the University Nebraska. An affiliate of Special Interest Group 9, Hearing and Hearing Disorders in Children, she is a member of the Arkansas Speech-Language-Hearing Association and American Evaluation Association.
As NSSLHA national advisor, Shapley will join the ASHA Board of Directors, succeeding Carlin Hageman, who has held the position for seven years.
Shapely describes herself as “passionate about engaging students in the professions of audiology and speech language pathology” and as advisor hopes to support the NSSLHA council to help faculty advisors and chapter officers find new ways to engage more students. “When we engage students in NSSLHA,” she says, “I believe they are more likely to take an active role in ASHA after they graduate.”
