Donors are catching the FUNdraising spirit and hosting parties to support the ASHFoundation. The first two events of 2014 raised more than $8,500, and more Fabulous Fundraisers are in the works. “The Fabulous Fundraisers will raise significant funds to support education and research for our field,” said Angie Singh, ASHFoundation past trustee and chair of this effort.
The University of Washington faculty and friends raised more than $6,000 during their March 1 Artful Fundraiser, hosted by the Department of Speech and Hearing Sciences in conjunction with the Fred and Barbara Minifie Lecture Series. Nancy Alarcon, Rich Folsom, Joan Hanson, Fred Minifie and Lesley Olswang planned the event; Blue Tree Publishing donated works of art; Hanson donated a handmade quilt; and party-goers made donations.
The April 5 Final Four Viewing Party, hosted by Bernard and Alicia Rousseau, Melanie Schuele and Anne Marie Tharpe, assembled Vanderbilt University’s Department of Hearing and Speech Sciences to raise more than $2,500. Basketball competition was serious, but the mood was light, as guests enjoyed the games and competed for the ASHFoundation Bracket Challenge and Final Four Spirit Award.
To date, 15 Fabulous Fundraisers are planned for 2014, and ASHFoundation trustees hope that many more individuals will volunteer to host a party. “The Fabulous Fundraisers are a wonderful way to raise awareness for individuals with hearing, speech and language disorders and to support funding for students and researchers in communication sciences and disorders,” says Alex Johnson, ASHFoundation president.
