ASHA’s tool for assessing the performance of school-based speech-language pathologists recently received an update, with new materials for SLPs and their supervisors.
The Performance Assessment of Contributions and Effectiveness (on.asha/pace-assessment) is used to measure the instructional contributions of school-based SLPs, who often are assessed using accountability measures and tools designed for classroom teachers.
ASHA first published PACE in 2012. The revised set of materials includes a self-reflection tool for SLPs, an observation form for evaluators, and a matrix on which the evaluator can assess the SLP’s portfolio and observation form.
Other materials help SLPs and evaluators through the process:
  • A new step-by-step guide for implementing components of PACE throughout the school year.

  • Guidelines for developing a portfolio.

  • Checklists for parents, classroom teachers and students (as appropriate) to record satisfaction with speech-language services.

  • A guide for evaluators.

  • An explanation of the need for a separate tool to evaluate SLPs.
