Applications are due by May 5 for the 2014 Minority Student Leadership Program, an ASHA program designed to enhance the leadership skills of communication sciences and disorders students.
The MSLP is held in conjunction with the annual ASHA convention. The 2014 program will take place Nov. 18–23 in Orlando.
The MSLP is open to CSD undergraduate seniors and students in master’s, AuD and PhD programs. The program aims to recruit and retain members of racial/ethnic minority groups historically under-represented in CSD, and to provide these students with focused educational programming and activities to build and enhance leadership skills, provide an understanding of association governance and operations, and give participants opportunities to interact with leaders in audiology, speech-language pathology, and speech, language, and hearing sciences.
Since 1999, more than 450 students from racial/ethnic minority backgrounds have participated in the MSLP, giving them insight into their leadership abilities, offering them a better understanding of how leaders affect change within ASHA, and empowering them to take risks and meet their own challenges. All students are eligible to apply; preference, however, is given to students from under-represented backgrounds.
Participants receive complimentary registration to the ASHA convention, up to five nights’ lodging, a meal stipend and program materials. Participants are responsible for transportation and personal expenses.
Applicants must complete the online form and submit an essay, resume, letter of support and statement of good standing. Successful applicants will be notified in September.
