Even though the season of gift-scrambling has passed, SLP Lois Brady’s blog “Speech Therapy for Autism” reminds us that every day is a good day to give the gift of a perfect app—one that is both entertaining and educational. Brady lists 10 of the top apps that SLPs can use to provide “edutainment” for their clients— everything from identifying body parts to making videos to learn pragmatic social skills. She explains why apps make good gifts.
“They can be fun, convenient, engaging and unbreakable. Chosen wisely, they can also offer the added benefit of educating in one form or another, such as building communication, language, fine motor skills, literacy and general life skills … So let’s get to it!” Brady’s list of “some of the best, tried-and-true apps” has been recommended by SLPs, assistive technology specialists, occupational therapists and, most important, the children themselves.
